CHENIN: STAR GRAPE VARIETY OF THE LOIRE VALLEY
Chenin blanc, or Pineau de Loire, is a grape variety that achieves expression in the Loire Valley found nowhere else.
The temperate climate allows it to ripen ever so gently, striking a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity so that the Vouvray wines are always refreshingly crisp and can be laid down for ageing over several decades.
There's also enough zing in this grape variety for it to be made into sparkling Fines Bulles wines that retain all of its distinctive fruitiness.
When the autumn sun shines at harvest time, botrytis, or "noble rot" as it is more commonly known, makes it possible to produce sweet and dessert wines which pack a wonderful aromatic punch.
